Concept And Uses Of Classification Systems

Akopọ

There are millions of different kinds of organism on Earth. To make sense of this variety, biologists sort living things into groups, a process called classification. A good system does more than tidy the shelves: it groups organisms by the features they truly share, and even reflects how closely they are related through evolution.

In this lesson you will learn what a species is, how the two-part binomial naming system avoids worldwide confusion, and how to build and use a dichotomous key. You will also see, at Extended level, how DNA base sequences now give the most objective measure of relatedness of all.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. State that organisms can be classified into groups by the features that they share
  2. Describe a species as a group of organisms that can reproduce to produce fertile offspring
  3. Describe the binomial system of naming species as an internationally agreed system in which the scientific name of an organism is made up of two parts showing the genus and species
  4. Construct and use dichotomous keys based on identifiable features
  5. [Supplement] Explain that classification systems aim to reflect evolutionary relationships
  6. [Supplement] Explain that the sequences of bases in DNA are used as a means of classification
  7. [Supplement] Explain that groups of organisms which share a more recent ancestor (are more closely related) have base sequences in DNA that are more similar than those that share only a distant ancestor

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

Classification is the backbone of biology. It lets a scientist in one country know exactly which organism a scientist in another is talking about, and it organises every group you will meet later (kingdoms, vertebrates, arthropods). The skill of reading and constructing keys is directly tested, and the Extended ideas about DNA and evolutionary relationships are increasingly common exam material.
