Water, Food And Agriculture

Akopọ

Water and food are the most basic of all human needs, and the two are bound tightly together, because growing food is by far the largest use of the world's fresh water. When water runs short, harvests fail and people go hungry; when farming is done badly, it pollutes and drains the very water it depends on. This topic sits at the meeting point of survival, fairness and the environment, which is exactly the kind of issue Global Perspectives is built to explore.

This note shows you how to think about it the GP way. You will see the core facts on hunger and water, each with its source and year, then look at the issue from a personal, national and global viewpoint. You will work through the big debates, such as whether GM crops are part of the answer, as argument and counter-argument, line up realistic courses of action with their trade-offs, and collect report and team-project ideas you could really use.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Explain why water, food and agriculture is an issue of global significance and describe its main causes and consequences.
  2. Compare personal, local/national and global perspectives on water, food and agriculture, with empathy and supporting evidence.
  3. Evaluate evidence, sources and arguments relating to water, food and agriculture, distinguishing fact, opinion, bias and vested interest.
  4. Develop a line of reasoning toward possible evidence-based courses of action on water, food and agriculture, and suggest report and team-project angles.

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

Water and food security matter to Global Perspectives because they are shared, unequal and connected. Rivers and rainfall cross borders, food is traded around the world, and a drought or a poor harvest in one region can push up prices everywhere. Yet the burden is deeply uneven: some people waste food and water while others cannot get enough of either. That combination of a shared system and unequal outcomes is what makes the topic so productive for a GP report or team project.
