Paper 2 Directed Writing And Composition: A Full Guide

Akopọ

Paper 2 is the writing exam. In two hours you answer two questions: one directed-writing task that everyone does, and one composition of your choice, either descriptive or narrative. There is no body of facts to revise here. What is being marked is how well you can shape ideas for a reader, organise them, and write with accurate, varied, well-chosen language. That is a craft, and like any craft it rewards a writer who knows exactly what the task wants before the pen moves.

This guide takes you through both sections. You will see the exact mark splits (Section A is one question in two parts giving 15 marks for content from reading and 25 for the quality of writing; Section B gives all 40 marks for your writing), what each task expects, the difference between describing and narrating that examiners watch for, a timing plan, a model directed-writing approach and a model plan for each composition type. Get the architecture clear and you will spend the exam writing well rather than guessing what is wanted.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Understand the structure of the Directed Writing and Composition paper.
  2. Plan and write a strong Section A directed-writing response and a Section B composition.
  3. Manage time, length and accuracy to meet the assessment criteria for content and for writing.

Paper 2 is worth 80 marks and is almost entirely a test of writing: only 15 of the 80 marks reward reading, and those sit inside Section A. That tells you where the effort goes. The quality of your writing, your vocabulary, sentence control, structure and accuracy, decides most of your grade across both sections. The two tasks pull in slightly different directions: Section A asks you to read one or two texts and respond to their ideas in a set form for a set audience, so it tests adaptation and purpose; Section B asks you to create an original piece, so it tests imagination and craft. Knowing which skills each section rewards lets you aim every sentence at the marks.
