Sport And Recreation

Akopọ

Sport can look like just a game, but it is one of the most powerful social forces on the planet. It shapes health, identity, money and politics, and a single event such as a World Cup or an Olympic Games can unite billions and reshape a city. Yet the picture is double-edged. The WHO reported in 2024 that about 31 per cent of adults, roughly 1.8 billion people, do not get enough physical activity, a figure it warns is rising. At the same time, hosting the biggest events is extremely costly: the Oxford Olympics Study 2024 found cost overruns at every Games on record, averaging about 156 per cent in real terms.

This note does not ask you to memorise results. It shows you how to weigh the personal, national and global views of sport and recreation, how to test a sporting claim before you trust it, how to argue real debates such as whether lower-income nations should host mega-events, and how to reason toward courses of action you could defend in a report or team project. Inclusion, commercialisation and the right to play all sit inside this one global question.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Explain why sport and recreation is an issue of global significance and describe its main causes and consequences.
  2. Compare personal, local/national and global perspectives on sport and recreation, with empathy and supporting evidence.
  3. Evaluate evidence, sources and arguments relating to sport and recreation, distinguishing fact, opinion, bias and vested interest.
  4. Develop a line of reasoning toward possible evidence-based courses of action on sport and recreation, and suggest report and team-project angles.

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

Sport and recreation means physical activity and play, from a school kickabout to a global tournament, and the rest and leisure that keep people well. It is a Global Perspectives issue because it touches health, money, identity and rights all at once. On health, the WHO reported in 2024 that about 31 per cent of adults worldwide, around 1.8 billion people, did not meet recommended levels of physical activity, and it projects inactivity to keep rising toward 35 per cent by 2030 unless action is taken, with the cost of treating the resulting disease running into hundreds of billions of dollars a year. On money and politics, sport is a giant global industry and a stage for national pride, soft power and, sometimes, controversy.
