Give it water, air and a little warmth and it wakes up: the root pushes down, the shoot pushes up, and within days a new crop is on its way. Every field a farmer plants starts with this one event, germination, and getting it right is the difference between a full stand of healthy seedlings and a patchy, gappy field.
In this lesson you will open up a bean seed and a maize grain to see how they are built, follow them step by step as they germinate, and pin down exactly what conditions a seed needs to start. You will learn why soil that is too wet can drown a seed even though seeds need water, and why a good seedbed and the right planting time matter so much for germination.
