AO2 Understanding

Akopọ

AO2 asks you to understand what a text means, not just what it says. Every literary text has a surface, the literal events and statements on the page, and a set of deeper meanings underneath: implied attitudes, themes, ambiguities and a writer's view of the world. AO2 rewards the reader who moves from the literal to the interpretive, who can sense what is suggested as well as what is stated, and who can hold more than one possible meaning at once.

This note shows you how to read beyond the surface in practice: how to infer a writer's ideas and attitudes, how to read subtext and ambiguity, and how to use a touch of context to illuminate meaning without letting biography or history take over the answer. Every model below works from out-of-copyright writing, so you can focus on the skill of interpretation rather than on any one set text.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Understand the meanings of literary texts and their contexts, and explore texts beyond surface meanings to show deeper awareness of ideas and attitudes.

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

The surface of a text is its literal level: the events that happen, the things a speaker plainly states, the scene a poem describes. Understanding the surface is necessary, but on its own it earns little. AO2 begins where the literal ends. It asks: what is this text really about? What attitude does the writer take towards it? What is suggested but never spelled out?
