Stitched And/or Embellished Textiles

Akopọ

A stitch is a line drawn in thread, and unlike a drawn line it has thickness, tension and a back. Every stitch pulls the cloth slightly, adds weight, and casts a real shadow, so a stitched surface is never flat in the way a printed one is. That is the whole opportunity of this area of study: you are working in relief, in real light, on material that answers back.

This note covers hand and machine stitch as drawing and as structure, applique and patchwork as construction in colour, quilting as a way of turning a plane into relief, and beading and embellishment as the point where weight becomes a design problem. It also takes seriously the traditions this work comes from, from kantha and boro to the quilts of Gee's Bend and the couture embroidery ateliers of Paris.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. Design stitched and/or embellished textiles for use in creative and commercial industries such as fashion, costume and interiors
  2. Use a range of stitched and/or embellished textiles materials, tools and techniques such as application and incorporation of media, objects and embellishments, hand and machine stitching

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

The specification asks for the design of stitched and embellished textiles for creative and commercial industries including fashion, costume and interiors, and for a range of materials, tools and techniques including the application and incorporation of media, objects and embellishments, and hand and machine stitching. Read that carefully and it is broader than embroidery: it covers anything worked into or onto an existing surface.
