A leaf is a few tenths of a millimetre thick and has to do three incompatible things at once: catch as much light as possible, let carbon dioxide in, and avoid drying out in the sun that provides the light. The way it is layered is the compromise, and every layer is there for a reason you can work out.
In this lesson you will name the plant tissues the specification asks for, slice through a leaf and account for each layer, and learn where the xylem and the phloem sit in a root and in a stem. That last detail is small and easily forgotten, and the specification names it in writing as the one piece of internal structure you need beyond the leaf itself.
