Identity And Migration

Akopọ

Every year, tens of millions of people leave the place they were born and settle somewhere else, sometimes by choice and sometimes because they have no real choice at all. Migration is one of the most discussed, and most misunderstood, issues in global citizenship, and getting the facts and the vocabulary right matters, because loose language can turn a person fleeing danger into a headline about 'migrants' with no distinction made at all.

In this lesson you will learn the real reasons people migrate, the factors that shape a person's identity, and how migration reshapes identity and diversity in the communities people leave and the communities they join.

Awọn Afojusun

  1. The main economic, political, cultural and environmental reasons for increased international migration
  2. The factors that shape individual and community identities, including ethnicity, gender, age, religion, disability and education
  3. The effects of migration on patterns of identity and diversity in local and national communities, including community cohesion and growing numbers of people with multiple identities

Akọ̀wé Ẹ̀kọ́

Migration is the movement of people from one place to live in another, either within a country (internal migration) or across an international border (international migration). Geographers explain migration using push factors, reasons that drive someone to leave a place, and pull factors, reasons that attract someone to a particular destination. The same underlying causes tend to fall into four categories.
