Managing The Impacts Of Tectonic Hazards

Akopọ

We cannot stop the plates moving, but we can decide how badly a tectonic event hurts us. The difference between a tragedy and a near miss often lies in the days before and after: did people get a warning, were the buildings strong, was there a plan, and how fast did help arrive? Good management has saved tens of thousands of lives, sometimes from the very same volcano that once seemed unstoppable.

In this lesson you will learn the difference between primary and secondary responses, evaluate the main tools used to reduce risk (monitoring, prediction, protection, planning and technology), and study two detailed named examples: the 2015 Nepal earthquake and the eruption of Mt Pinatubo, where prediction saved thousands of lives.

  1. Primary and secondary responses.
  2. An evaluation of the strategies and techniques used to manage the impacts of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions: monitoring, prediction, protection, planning and technology.
  3. One detailed specific example to include: • the causes and impacts of an earthquake on a named country/area • the responses to the earthquake • the strategies and techniques used to manage the impacts of earthquakes.
  4. One detailed specific example to include: • the causes and impacts of an eruption of a named volcano • the responses to the volcanic eruption • the strategies and techniques used to manage the impacts of volcanic eruptions.

This is where geography becomes useful: turning understanding of hazards into actions that save lives. Examiners expect you to evaluate strategies (say how well each works and its limits, not just list them) and to support your answer with detailed, named examples. The two case studies below give you the facts you need for the high-mark questions.
