A child born in one region can expect eight more years of life than a child born a thousand kilometres away under the same flag, taught by the same national curriculum and counted in the same census.
This lesson maps that unevenness at two scales. First you will describe the global pattern and trace the historic, economic and social reasons behind it. Then you will go inside one named country, Brazil, to see how poverty, unemployment, inadequate housing and patchy infrastructure cluster in particular places. Finally you will learn to read the demographic fingerprints, fertility, mortality and population structure, that different levels of development leave behind.
