Lead is called heavy and cork is called light, yet a tiny lead pellet weighs far less than a whole cork life-ring. What we really mean is that lead packs much more mass into each unit of volume. That idea, mass per unit volume, is density, and it lets you predict whether a pebble sinks, why an iron ship floats, and which liquid settles on top when two will not mix.
In this lesson you will define density, learn the equation that links mass, volume and density, and measure it for a liquid, a regular solid and an awkward irregular solid using displacement. You will then use density data the way examiners ask: to decide whether an object floats or sinks, and whether one liquid floats on another.

Which weighs more, a ton of feathers or a ton of bricks? This old riddle plays with the distinction between mass and density. A ton is a ton, of course; but bricks have much greater density than feathers, and so we are tempted to think of them as heavier. (See Figure 11.4 .) Density , as you will se

When you rise from lounging in a warm bath, your arms feel strangely heavy. This is because you no longer have the buoyant support of the water. Where does this buoyant force come from? Why is it that some things float and others do not? Do objects that sink get any support at all from the fluid? Is
