They took for themselves the best portions of the offerings, and they even took offerings that were meant for God before they had been properly offered. In 1 Kings 18, Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal to a contest to determine which deity was the true God. Elijah, on the other hand, built an altar, put his sacrifice on it, and called on the God of Israel to send down fire, which He did.
