These 12 sons became the patriarchs of the 12 tribes of Israel, which were the Hebrew people that God was talking about. While other peoples, such as the Ishmaelites, Philistines, and Edomites, were also living in the region at the time, it was the Hebrews who were chosen by God to receive the land as their inheritance. This promise was fulfilled when the Israelites, led by Joshua, conquered the land of Canaan and established the nation of Israel in the Old Testament.
