Global Language And Communication

Muhtasari

Fewer than one in five people on earth grow up speaking English as a first language, yet it is the language most likely to appear on an airport sign, a scientific journal or a business meeting agenda almost anywhere in the world. Understanding why a small number of languages dominate global communication, while others are gaining ground fast, is central to understanding global citizenship.

In this lesson you will examine why certain languages spread widely, how communications technology has shrunk the world, and how easier travel connects different user groups, tourists, migrants and the global business community, across borders.

Malengo

  1. Reasons for the widespread use of European languages and increased take up of Chinese and Arabic
  2. Communications technology, and the shrinking world and its effects on language and communication
  3. Increased accessibility of travel within and between countries, including an overview of user groups (tourists, migrants and the global business community)

Maelezo ya Somo

A handful of languages are used far beyond the countries where they first developed, largely because of history rather than any quality inherent to the language itself. European languages, particularly English, Spanish, French and Portuguese, spread across large parts of the world during centuries of European colonisation, when colonising powers established these languages as the language of government, education, law and often trade in the territories they controlled. When former colonies gained independence, many retained the colonial language, sometimes as one official language among several, because it was already embedded in their institutions, connected them to international trade and diplomacy, and could serve as a shared language among citizens who spoke many different local languages.
