Paraphrase And Spotting Distractors

Muhtasari

Two reading habits decide a surprising number of marks: saying things in your own words, and refusing to be fooled by detail that is true but irrelevant. Paraphrase is the skill of re-expressing an idea without copying it, and it proves you have understood rather than simply located a line. Distractors are the traps the paper sets, the answers that share a keyword or a topic with the question but do not actually answer it. Read carelessly and you copy the wrong line; read well and you reword the right one.

This lesson trains both. You will learn to recognise paraphrase and synonyms when a text rewords the answer, to put information into your own words cleanly, and to spot and reject the distractor that sits tantalisingly nearby. We model each move on short, realistic snippets, set a weak answer beside a strong one, and finish with a full task marked the way an examiner would mark it. These two habits run through the whole Reading and Writing paper.

Malengo

  1. Express information from a text in your own words rather than copying it.
  2. Recognise paraphrase and synonyms when the answer is reworded in the text.
  3. Identify distracting detail designed to tempt an incorrect answer.

Maelezo ya Somo

Putting information into your own words and seeing through distractors are not one exercise; they run across the reading and the summary exercises of Component 1. The assessment objective is reading: understanding information and ideas, including when they are reworded, and selecting only what is relevant. In the summary exercise in particular, marks are given both for the points you find and for the quality of the language, and re-expressing the writer's idea in your own grammar lifts the language mark. In the comprehension and matching exercises, the correct answer is usually a paraphrase, and the wrong answers are distractors built from shared words.
