Material Management

Muhtasari

A student cuts every rail of a frame to the length shown on the drawing, assembles it, and finds the frame is 50 millimetres too small in both directions. Nothing was measured wrongly. The drawing gave the finished, visible length of each rail, and the tenons at each end have to be inside the joint, so every rail needed to be cut 25 millimetres longer at each end. The arithmetic was right and the material was managed wrongly, and that distinction is what this lesson is about.

Material management covers three things the specification names: planning the cutting and shaping of material to minimise waste, including the nesting of shapes and parts to be cut from material stock forms; how additional material may be removed by a cutting method or joint overlap; and using appropriate marking out methods, data points and coordinates, including reference points, lines and surfaces, templates, jigs and patterns. Underneath all of it sits the specification's own sentence about why any of it matters: the value of using measurement and marking out to create an accurate and quality prototype. This is designing and making principles content, examined in Section C of Paper 1.

Malengo

  1. Cut materials efficiently and minimise waste
  2. The importance of planning the cutting and shaping of material to minimise waste e.g. nesting of shapes and parts to be cut from material stock forms.
  3. How additional material may be removed by a cutting method or joint overlap etc.
  4. Use appropriate marking out methods, data points and coordinates
  5. The value of using measurement and marking out to create an accurate and quality prototype.
  6. The use of data points and coordinates including the use of reference points, lines and surfaces, templates, jigs and/or patterns.

Maelezo ya Somo

Start with the idea that catches everybody, because the specification names it explicitly: how additional material may be removed by a cutting method or joint overlap. A drawing gives finished sizes. The piece you cut has to be bigger than the finished size, by an amount that comes from three separate sources.
