Employment

Muhtasari

A job is far more than a wage. It shapes a person's security, dignity, identity and place in society, which is why the question of who works, at what, and on what terms is one of the great global issues. Today that question is being reshaped fast: automation and artificial intelligence are changing what humans do, the gig economy is rewriting the deal between worker and employer, and young people in many countries struggle to find decent work at all. In Global Perspectives you are not asked to memorise labour statistics; you are asked to weigh how work looks to a person, to a country and to the whole world, to test the evidence on each side, and to reason toward fair, workable action.

This note shows you how. You will meet the core facts stated with their sources and years, the forces reshaping work, the three perspectives set side by side, the big debates (will automation destroy jobs? is the gig economy freedom or insecurity?) laid out as argument and counter-argument so you stay balanced, and report and team-project ideas you could really use. The worked examples model the skills the exam rewards: spotting a perspective, evaluating a claim, framing a sharp question and building a line of reasoning.

Malengo

  1. Explain why employment is an issue of global significance and describe its main causes and consequences.
  2. Compare personal, local/national and global perspectives on employment, with empathy and supporting evidence.
  3. Evaluate evidence, sources and arguments relating to employment, distinguishing fact, opinion, bias and vested interest.
  4. Develop a line of reasoning toward possible evidence-based courses of action on employment, and suggest report and team-project angles.

Maelezo ya Somo

Employment matters to Global Perspectives because work touches nearly everyone and links to almost every other topic: poverty, education, migration, technology and inequality all run through the world of work. It is global because the same forces, automation, digital platforms and shifting trade, are reshaping jobs everywhere at once, even though they play out very differently in a high-income city and a low-income village. Decent work for all is the eighth UN Sustainable Development Goal, which signals how central the issue is to the whole world.
