Citizenship In Action (Culture And Community)

Muhtasari

Understanding culture and community as a global citizen is only half the task; the other half is doing something about it. Neighbours who organise a street festival, students who campaign against discrimination at their school, volunteers who restore a local heritage site, and charities that promote understanding between different cultural communities are all practising citizenship in action, turning knowledge about culture and community into real, local change.

In this lesson you will examine why laws matter for protecting the public and settling disputes over cultural behaviour, how education tackles cultural bias and promotes literacy, how individuals raise their own awareness of cultural shifts, and how schools, charities, NGOs and international organisations promote respect for different cultures and identities.

Malengo

  1. Changing behaviours: understanding why laws are needed in society to protect the public and settle disputes; responding to situations in society
  2. Recognising the importance of education for promoting literacy and tackling cultural bias against disadvantaged groups in some societies
  3. Raising of own awareness of shifts in cultural traditions; health and social care related issues; educational initiatives for cultural change
  4. Understanding the work of schools, charities, NGOs, and international organisations in promoting the understanding of, and respect for, different national cultures and personal identities

Maelezo ya Somo

Communities made up of people with different cultural backgrounds, beliefs and identities inevitably experience disagreement, and sometimes conflict, over how to live together. Laws exist partly to manage this: they set out shared, enforceable rules that protect individuals and communities from harm, and they give people a formal, peaceful way to settle disputes rather than resolving disagreements through unregulated conflict.
