In the 1970s, scientists learned how to cut DNA at precise locations and splice genes from one species into another. That breakthrough launched modern genetic engineering. Today, genetically modified bacteria manufacture life-saving insulin around the clock, and GM crops feed millions of people in regions where conventional varieties would fail. The technique rests on just a handful of molecular tools: restriction enzymes, ligase, and vectors.
