Selective breeding takes generations and is limited to the traits already present in a species. Genetic modification breaks both of those barriers: scientists can now cut a gene from one organism and paste it into an entirely different species, producing a result in months rather than decades.
In this lesson you will learn how restriction enzymes and ligase work together to build recombinant DNA, how plasmids and viruses act as vectors, and how these tools have made it possible to mass-produce human insulin and engineer crops that resist pests and drought.
