Transition Elements

In the wide central block of the periodic table sit the transition elements, the familiar everyday metals such as iron, copper, nickel and chromium. They are the metals we build with, wire our homes with and shape into tools, and they bring a distinctive set of properties that set them apart from the reactive metals of Groups I and II.
In this lesson you will learn the characteristic properties of the transition elements: their high densities and melting points, their coloured compounds, their use as catalysts, and the way they form ions with more than one charge, such as iron(II) and iron(III).
