Values And Beliefs

Muhtasari

What people believe about right and wrong, the meaning of life and how a society should be run shapes almost everything else: laws, schools, family life, dress, food and how strangers treat one another. Across the world, billions of people hold deep religious faiths, while a growing number describe themselves as having no religion, and everyone, believer or not, carries values they live by. When these values meet, in a classroom, a workplace or a nation, the result can be rich understanding or sharp conflict.

In this lesson you will learn to think about values and beliefs the Global Perspectives way: with curiosity and respect, not judgement. You will weigh why the topic matters worldwide, set the personal, national and global perspectives side by side, balance the arguments in debates such as how far the state should keep out of religion, and judge fair courses of action. By the end you will be able to frame a sharp, sensitive report question and back it with current, reliable evidence.

Malengo

  1. Explain why values and beliefs is an issue of global significance and describe its main causes and consequences.
  2. Compare personal, local/national and global perspectives on values and beliefs, with empathy and supporting evidence.
  3. Evaluate evidence, sources and arguments relating to values and beliefs, distinguishing fact, opinion, bias and vested interest.
  4. Develop a line of reasoning toward possible evidence-based courses of action on values and beliefs, and suggest report and team-project angles.

Maelezo ya Somo

Values and beliefs are among the most powerful forces in human life, and the global picture is shifting. According to the Pew Research Center's June 2025 study of how the religious landscape changed from 2010 to 2020, Christianity remained the largest religion with about 28.8% of the world's people, Islam was the second largest and fastest growing at around 25.6%, and people with no religious affiliation, often called the "nones", had become the third-largest group at about 24.2%. The same study found that religious switching, mostly people leaving Christianity, was a main driver of the growth in the unaffiliated, while the Muslim population grew fastest mainly because of a younger age profile. Beliefs are not fixed; they change across generations and regions.
