AO2 Explore

Muhtasari

If AO1 is about looking at the world, AO2 is about playing with the materials you use to respond to it. Exploration in Art and Design means trying things - different media, different surfaces, different processes - not just settling on the technique you already know. Cambridge rewards candidates who show a broad and adventurous engagement with resources: the student who tries only pencil throughout a project cannot demonstrate the range this objective demands.

This note explains how to approach exploration purposefully rather than randomly, which media and processes to consider, how to document your experiments so they count as evidence, and how the examiner distinguishes genuine exploration from superficial variety.

Malengo

  1. Explore and select appropriate resources, media, techniques and processes.

Maelezo ya Somo

AO2 asks you to investigate a wide range of materials and methods and then make a reasoned choice of which to take forward. The word that carries the most weight is appropriate: exploration is not random experimentation. Every test, every trial, every sample should connect to your project's starting point and intentions. A student working on a project about 'Urban Decay' who explores textures by pressing wire mesh into monoprint ink, rubbing charcoal over corrugated card, and experimenting with bleach on black paper is demonstrating purposeful exploration. A student who tries watercolour portraits because they enjoy portraits, regardless of the theme, is not.
