Analysing A Writer's Use Of Language

One question on Paper 1 is worth more marks than almost any other single task in the whole reading paper, and it is the one most students get wrong. It asks you to explain how a writer uses language to create effect. Weaker answers just point at a metaphor and say it is 'effective' or 'paints a picture'. Stronger answers do something quite different: they take a precise phrase, explain exactly what it means, and then show what it makes the reader feel or see. That gap, between spotting a feature and analysing its effect, is the gap between the middle bands and the top of the mark scheme.
This lesson teaches you the chain that top answers follow every time: quotation, technique, precise effect, reader response. You will see weak comments rebuilt into strong ones, study a fully annotated model paragraph that shows the chain in action phrase by phrase, and practise on a real-style writer's effects task with a model answer and the actual mark-scheme bands.
