Diversity, Rights And Equality In Britain, 1914-2010

Muhtasari

In 1914 no woman in Britain could vote in a general election, a disabled person had no legal protection in employment, and a man could be imprisoned for a consensual relationship with another man. By 2010 a single Act of Parliament protected people from discrimination on nine different grounds at once. The distance travelled is enormous, and the way it was travelled is the interesting part.

This is a breadth study, so the marks are in the pattern. Change came in bursts, usually after wars, usually after sustained pressure from people with no formal power, and usually well behind the point at which campaigners had first asked. Some of the arguments in this topic, particularly about immigration and about race relations, are still live political disputes; handle them as a historian, setting out positions accurately and attributing contested claims rather than assuming your reader shares your view.

Malengo

  1. The fight for recognition, 1914-1928: the nature of diversity, rights and equality in 1914, the impact of the First World War on attitudes and opportunities, changes in voting rights, the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act, the Education Act (1918)
  2. The impact of Depression and war, 1928-45: race, gender, disability and class in Depression and war, eugenics, unemployment, the Jarrow Crusade, immigration and ethnic tensions, the BUF, World War II experiences, the Disabled Persons (Employment) Act (1944)
  3. Consequences of war and the end of empire, 1944-62: Empire and Commonwealth immigrants, the Windrush, Claudia Jones, the Commonwealth Immigrants Act, changes in attitudes to women, sexual minorities and disabled people, the Paralympic Games, Butler's Education Act, the NHS
  4. Changes in civil rights, c1962-1986: feminism, the Dagenham women's strike, campaigns for racial equality, the Bristol Bus Boycott, the Warnock Report, barriers to change including Enoch Powell, key legislation including the Race Relations Act, the Equal Pay Act, the Sex Discrimination Act
  5. Changes in opportunity and culture, 1986-2010: equal rights and cultural diversity, the Stephen Lawrence case, third-wave feminism, the LGBT Foundation, diversity in arts and culture, barriers to change including Section 28, institutional racism, the Equality Act (2010)

Maelezo ya Somo

The specification tracks five overlapping strands: gender, race and ethnicity, disability, sexuality, and class. They did not move together. Women's voting rights advanced in 1918 and 1928, while disability rights waited until 1944 for their first significant statute and until 1995 for a comprehensive one. Race relations legislation arrived in stages from 1965, while the legal position of gay men changed only from 1967 and then went backwards with Section 28 in 1988. Noticing that the strands ran at different speeds, and explaining why, is the single most useful analytical move in this topic.
