Externally-set Assignment

Muhtasari

Ten hours to make an object. Not to design one, not to draw one: to make one, unaided, in a supervised workshop, from studies you sealed before you walked in. For a Three-dimensional Design candidate that is a harder brief than it sounds, because materials have their own timetable. Glue cures at its own pace. Plaster goes off when it decides to. A kiln cycle is measured in days, not sessions.

Which means the design decision that most affects your mark in this component is not what the object looks like. It is what the object is made of, at what scale, and in what order it can be assembled. This note is about choosing a response you can genuinely build in four supervised sessions, preparing jigs, formers and cut parts that are legitimately yours to prepare, and photographing the result so an examiner can see the thing you actually made.

Malengo

  1. Present personal responses to an externally-set broad-based thematic starting point
  2. Complete preparatory studies in response to the externally-set theme
  3. Complete a 10-hour period of sustained focus under supervised conditions
  4. Submit three sheets of supporting studies (maximum A2) and one sheet of final outcome(s) (maximum A2)

Maelezo ya Somo

The Externally-set Assignment is Component 2. It is 50 per cent of your Three-dimensional Design International GCSE and carries 72 marks, matching the Personal Portfolio, for 144 marks overall. Pearson sets one broad-based thematic starting point, opened out through a set of suggested starting points, and releases it on 2 January each year. You answer it in Three-dimensional Design, because your Component 2 endorsement must match your Component 1 endorsement. All four assessment objectives are assessed here at 12.5 per cent each, and your preparatory studies and final response together must evidence all four.

  1. Why should a large glue-up be scheduled at the end of a supervised session rather than the middle? A) Because adhesive works better later in the day B) Because the assembly then cures during the gap before the next session, when the work is in secure storage anyway C) Because the invigilator must witness it D) Because clamps are only available at the end of a session Answer: B
  2. Which of these may legitimately be made during the preparatory period? A) The final response itself B) Maquettes, test pieces and dimensioned working drawings C) Nothing; all work must be made in the ten hours D) Only written notes Answer: B
  3. A candidate proposes a glazed and fired ceramic outcome to be completed within the 10-hour period. What is the main objection? A) Ceramics is not an area of study in Three-dimensional Design B) Drying and firing cycles take far longer than the supervised sessions and cannot happen while the candidate has no access to the work C) Kilns may not be used in examinations D) Fired work cannot be photographed Answer: B
  4. What is the purpose of a jig in the assembly of a model? A) To sharpen cutting tools B) To hold parts in the correct relationship while adhesive cures C) To measure shrinkage D) To transfer a drawing to the material Answer: B
  5. A candidate cannot build their design at full size in ten hours. Which response is most appropriate? A) Submit drawings only B) Build a scale model, or a sectional model, together with a full-size mock-up of a critical detail C) Change endorsement D) Ask for extra time Answer: B
