Externally-set Assignment

Muhtasari

Textiles is slow. That is not a criticism, it is the defining fact of this component. Hand stitch runs at the speed of a hand. A dye bath takes as long as it takes and then the cloth is wet. A heat-set pleat needs the press free. And you have ten supervised hours, split into as many as four sessions, in which the response has to be made unaided from studies that were sealed before you walked in.

Which means the winning decision in this component is almost never about pattern or palette. It is about which processes you put inside the ten hours and which you complete before them, and about designing an outcome whose slowest operation still fits. This note is about making those choices well, and about the sampling and recipe-keeping that turns supervised time into production time.

Malengo

  1. Present personal responses to an externally-set broad-based thematic starting point
  2. Complete preparatory studies in response to the externally-set theme
  3. Complete a 10-hour period of sustained focus under supervised conditions
  4. Submit three sheets of supporting studies (maximum A2) and one sheet of final outcome(s) (maximum A2)

Maelezo ya Somo

The Externally-set Assignment is Component 2. It is 50 per cent of your Textile Design International GCSE and carries 72 marks, matching the Personal Portfolio, for 144 marks in total. Pearson sets one broad-based thematic starting point, opened out through a set of suggested starting points, and releases it on 2 January. You answer it in Textile Design, because your Component 2 endorsement must match your Component 1 endorsement. All four assessment objectives are assessed here at 12.5 per cent each, and your preparatory studies together with your final response must evidence all four.

  1. Why should hand stitching be scheduled for the later supervised sessions? A) Because it is the most important part of the design B) Because it needs no equipment, can absorb a queue and can be stopped at a defensible point if time runs short C) Because thread weakens if worked early D) Because machines are not available late in a session Answer: B
  2. Why should an irreversible process such as heat setting be placed early in the ten hours? A) Presses run hotter in the morning B) So that if a setting misbehaves there is still time to remake the component C) Because heat setting must precede all drawing D) Because it cannot be done after cutting Answer: B
  3. What is the single number that most determines whether a textile response is feasible in ten hours? A) The number of colours in the palette B) The measured rate of the slowest process, established by timing a sample C) The width of the cloth D) The number of sessions available Answer: B
  4. Which of these is clearly permitted as preparatory work? A) Constructing the final garment B) Making samples, swatches and test pieces, and drafting a pattern or toile C) Hand finishing the outcome D) Mounting the final outcome sheet Answer: B
  5. Why is a wet process badly placed in the final supervised session? A) Water damages the assessment sheets B) Because the cloth must be rinsed, dried and pressed before it can be cut, stitched or mounted, and there is no time left for that C) Because dye may not be used under examination conditions D) Because the invigilator must approve it Answer: B
