AO4 Personal Response

Muhtasari

AO4 asks for your own response to a text, but the word that matters is informed. A personal response is not a verdict on whether you liked a poem or found a character annoying. It is a considered judgement about the text, rooted in its words and methods, that only you could have written because it grows out of your own careful reading.

This note draws the line between an unsupported opinion and a critical personal response. It shows how conviction is earned through evidence, how engagement can be sensitive as well as confident, and how your response should run through a whole essay in the verbs and judgements you choose, not be tacked on in a final sentence. Every model uses out-of-copyright writing so you can study the move rather than memorise a set text.

Malengo

  1. Communicate a sensitive and informed personal response to literary texts.

Maelezo ya Somo

Many students hear ‘personal response’ and reach for taste: ‘I really enjoyed this’ or ‘I found the ending boring’. That is a reaction, not a response. A reaction stops at the feeling; a response explains what in the text produced the feeling and weighs what it means. The examiner cannot reward ‘I found this sad’ because it tells them nothing about the writing. They can reward ‘the poem earns its sadness by’ followed by the evidence, because now your feeling is anchored to the text and becomes a reading.
