Before a single cut is made in card or board, the work has to be measured and marked out, and the accuracy of everything that follows depends on getting this stage right. A carton that is creased a millimetre off will not fold square; a logo placed by eye will sit crooked on the panel. It explains how to read a steel rule accurately, how to set out square and parallel lines with set squares and a try square, how to mark and check angles, how to lay out repeated and symmetrical features, and how the same marking-out logic is carried out digitally before sending a job to a cutter or plotter.
