Every substance you encounter, from the iron in a bridge to the oxygen you breathe, is made of atoms. These incredibly small particles have an internal structure that determines which element they belong to, how they bond, and how they react. Understanding what sits inside an atom is the starting point for almost all of chemistry.
In this lesson you will learn the difference between atoms and molecules, discover the three sub-atomic particles and where they sit, and master the key terms: atomic number, mass number, and isotope. You will also practise calculating relative atomic mass from isotopic abundance data, a skill tested frequently on Paper 1.
