Engineers, financiers and weather forecasters all face the same problem: they need to know how something will behave before it happens. Computer modelling lets them find out safely, cheaply and quickly, by building a mathematical copy of the real system and trying out scenarios on a screen instead of in the real world.
This lesson explains what a computer model is, how a simulation lets you experiment with the future, and where modelling is used: from a household budget on a spreadsheet to flood barriers, traffic lights and weather forecasts. It also weighs the real advantages of modelling against its limits, so you can argue, as the exam expects, when a model is the right tool and when it is not.
