Presentation

Muhtasari

A line drawing tells the truth about shape, but it says nothing about how a product would actually look and feel. Presentation techniques close that gap. By adding shading, colour, the play of light and shadow, and rendering that imitates real materials, a designer turns a flat outline into a convincing image that a client can believe in. The same wireframe of a bottle can be made to read as frosted glass, brushed aluminium or glossy plastic purely through the way it is rendered.

This note covers the graphic-products presentation toolkit: using shading, colouring and the thick-and-thin line technique to add emphasis and depth; applying a consistent understanding of light, shade and shadow to give a pictorial drawing real visual impact; and rendering surfaces so they convincingly read as wood, metal or polymer. Each technique is explained as a set of decisions about a single, consistent light source, so your presentation drawings look deliberate rather than decorated.

Malengo

  1. use shading, colouring and other techniques for emphasis (e.g. the thick and thin line technique)
  2. apply an understanding of light, shade and shadow to give increased visual impact to pictorial drawing
  3. communicate the material and surface finish of a given product by rendering drawings to look like wood, metal and polymer.

Maelezo ya Somo

Two designers can draw the same product with identical shapes and sizes, yet one drawing wins the client and the other does not. The difference is presentation: the rendered drawing communicates not just what the product is but what it would be like to own. Shading gives form, colour gives identity, light and shadow give the sense of a real object sitting in real space, and material rendering tells the eye whether it is looking at warm timber, cold metal or moulded plastic. None of this is decoration for its own sake; each technique adds a layer of information that a plain outline cannot carry, and all of it depends on one disciplined idea: a single, consistent light source.
