Figurative Language, Imagery And Literary Devices

Muhtasari

Writers rarely say things in the plainest possible way. They compare a stormy sea to a wild animal, give a lonely house a human voice, or choose words whose very sound echoes their meaning. These are the tools of figurative language and imagery, and the Paper 1 writer's effects question asks you specifically to discuss them. Knowing the names is the easy part. The marks come from explaining what each image makes the reader feel or picture, and that is exactly where most students stop too soon.

This lesson takes you through the main devices one by one, similes, metaphors, personification, sensory imagery and the sound devices, and shows you how to turn each from a label into a real comment on effect. You will see weak 'this is a metaphor' comments rebuilt into strong ones, study a fully annotated paragraph packed with imagery, and practise on an exam-style task with a model answer and the actual mark-scheme criteria. The goal is simple: never name a device without saying what it does.

Malengo

  1. Recognise and respond to linguistic devices, figurative language and imagery.
  2. Explain how similes, metaphors, personification and other imagery shape meaning and effect.
  3. Identify the effect of sound, structure and other stylistic devices in a text.

Maelezo ya Somo

Recognising and responding to figurative language and imagery is part of reading objective R4: working out how a writer's choices shape the reader's response. The Paper 1 short-answer and language task, Question 3, asks directly about how a writer uses language to achieve effects, and your selections should include imagery; the higher levels reward candidates who handle imagery with care and originality and spot an image for what it is before explaining it. So imagery is not an optional extra you mention if you have time; it is built into one of the highest-value reading tasks on the paper. The same skill powers your own descriptive and narrative writing, where well-chosen images lift a piece into the top writing bands.
