The Responses To Desertification, Deforestation And Climate Change Vary Depending On A Country's Level Of Development

Muhtasari

Knowing what is going wrong is the easy half. The harder question is what a country can actually do about it, and the answer depends heavily on what that country can afford, what it can enforce and what it is willing to give up. A response that works in a high-income country with reliable electricity may be useless in a village with no grid connection.

This lesson covers three responses in turn: the technologies that ease water shortage in drylands, the approaches used to manage the Amazon rainforest more sustainably, and the different things individuals, organisations and governments are doing about climate change in the United Kingdom and in India. Throughout, the assessment question is the same: does it work, who pays and can it be sustained?

Malengo

  1. How technology can resolve water-resource shortages in fragile environments under threat from desertification
  2. Different approaches to the sustainable use and management of a rainforest in a named region to limit the extent of deforestation
  3. Different responses to global warming and climate change from individuals, organisations and governments in a named developed and a named emerging or developing country

Maelezo ya Somo

Two governments can face the same degraded land and reach opposite conclusions about what to do, because their options are not the same. A desalination plant needs capital, engineers and a large and reliable electricity supply. A stone line that slows runoff across a field needs stones and a weekend. Both are legitimate responses. Judging a response means judging it against the resources of the place it is used in, not against an ideal.
