How Does Society Control Us?

Muhtasari

Most people, most of the time, obey the rules: they stop at red lights, pay for their shopping and keep their voices down in a library. Why? Part of the answer is that society controls us, sometimes openly through laws, police and courts, and sometimes quietly through a raised eyebrow or a word of praise. Social control is the glue that turns a crowd of individuals into an orderly society, and this topic asks how it works and who it really serves.

Here you will learn the sharp distinction between formal and informal control, the difference between positive and negative sanctions, and how the formal agencies of the state (government, law, police, courts, the penal system and the armed forces) keep order. You will weigh whether control benefits everyone, as Functionalists claim, or mainly protects the powerful, as Marxists and Feminists argue, and you will see how digital surveillance is reshaping control in the modern world.

Maelezo ya Somo

Socialisation teaches us the rules; social control is what keeps us following them once we know them. Understanding it explains why societies stay orderly without constant force, and it sets up the whole topic of crime and deviance later in the course. CIE rewards students who can define formal and informal control precisely, give the right examples of sanctions, and then argue about whether control works fairly. Master that here and you have the tools for many of the highest-mark questions.
