Understanding Vocabulary In Context

Muhtasari

Two of the surest marks on the Reading paper come from a single skill: working out what a word means from the company it keeps. You are not allowed a dictionary, and you do not need one. The sentence around a word, the situation it describes and the feeling it carries all point you to its meaning. The trick is to explain the word as the writer is using it, here, in this context, not the safe definition you half remember from somewhere else.

This lesson shows you how. You will learn to read the clues around an unfamiliar word, to give a contextual meaning rather than a generic one, and to notice the connotation a word choice carries. We model the two real question types, set a weak answer against a strong one, annotate a model response, and finish with an exam-style task marked the way an examiner marks it.

Malengo

  1. Work out the meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases from their context.
  2. Explain the meaning of words and phrases as the writer uses them, not just a dictionary definition.
  3. Recognise connotation and shades of meaning in a writer's word choices.

Maelezo ya Somo

Question 3 on Paper 1, the short-answer and language task, opens with vocabulary sub-questions worth a string of single marks, and they are among the most winnable on the whole paper. They test two things. First, R1 and R2: can you grasp the meaning of a word as it is actually used? Second, your ability to express that meaning in your own words. The skill is also the foundation of everything harder. You cannot analyse a writer's effects if you have misread what the words mean, and you cannot summarise a text you have only half understood. Reading in context is the engine under the bonnet of the entire paper.
