Testing And Evaluating

Muhtasari

Designing is never a single straight line from brief to product. Good designers are constantly checking their work against what it is supposed to do, finding problems early, and improving as they go. Testing and evaluating is that checking habit made formal: comparing what you have made against the specification, judging how well it meets the needs of the user and the wider world, and being honest about what worked and what did not.

This note covers the 0445 testing and evaluating objectives: why testing and evaluation must run throughout the whole design process and not just at the end; how to evaluate a product against its specification and across its social, ethical and environmental life cycle; how to write balanced concluding comments about successes and limitations; and how to propose sensible further developments. Each idea is grounded in real product examples so you can apply the same thinking to your own coursework.

Malengo

  1. understand the importance of testing and evaluating throughout the design process
  2. evaluate a product with reference to the specification, and its social, ethical and environmental impact throughout its life cycle
  3. make concluding comments about the successes and limitations of the design
  4. identify proposals for further development of a product.

Maelezo ya Somo

A common misconception is that evaluation is something you do once, at the very end, by writing a paragraph that says the product turned out well. In reality, testing and evaluating run throughout the design process. You test early ideas with quick models, you test a chosen design against the specification before committing, you test joints and finishes on scrap before using them on the real product, and you test the finished article with real users. Each test feeds a small evaluation, and each evaluation changes what you do next. This is the iterative loop at the heart of design: make, test, evaluate, improve, repeated until the product is right.
