Informal Writing: Emails And Letters

Muhtasari

The informal writing task asks you to write to someone you know well, a friend or a family member, as if you really were writing to them. You are given a situation and three short prompts to cover, and you must answer all of them in a warm, natural, personal voice. It is a task that rewards sounding like a real person, not a textbook.

This lesson shows you how to hit the friendly register, address every prompt and develop each one with detail, so your email feels like a genuine message rather than a list of answers. You will compare a flat, formal attempt with a lively, friendly one, and see a full model email marked for both its content and its language.

Malengo

  1. Write an informal email or letter that addresses every part of the task.
  2. Use a friendly, personal register suited to a friend or family reader.
  3. Develop ideas with detail, reasons and a clear sense of the writer's voice.

Maelezo ya Somo

Exercise 5 in Component 1 is the informal writing task. You write an email or a letter to a friend or family member about a given situation, covering three short bullet prompts. It is marked for content (how well you address and develop each prompt) and for language (the range, accuracy and organisation of your writing). The single thing that makes or breaks it is register: this reader knows you, so the writing must sound friendly, personal and natural, not stiff or official.
