Scanning And Multiple Matching

Muhtasari

Multiple matching looks easy and trips up careful readers. You are given several short texts, often a set of people describing the same kind of experience, and a list of statements. For each statement you decide which text it belongs to. The catch is that the right text almost never uses the words of the statement. The skill being tested is your ability to follow an idea through different words, not to spot matching vocabulary.

This lesson teaches the two moves that win these marks: scanning fast to find where an idea lives, and matching by meaning so that synonyms and paraphrase do not throw you. You will also learn to resist the traps, the texts that repeat a keyword from the statement but do not actually say the thing it claims. We model every move on short invented extracts, contrast a weak choice with a strong one, and finish with a full matching task marked the way an examiner marks it.

Malengo

  1. Scan several short texts quickly to find where a required idea is expressed.
  2. Match each statement to the right text when the same idea is worded differently.
  3. Recognise synonyms and paraphrase rather than relying on matching words.

Maelezo ya Somo

Exercise 2 of Component 1 is a multiple-matching reading exercise. You read several short texts, usually labelled with letters, and a list of statements about ideas, opinions or experiences. For each statement you write the letter of the text where that idea is expressed. The assessment objective is reading: identifying and understanding ideas, opinions and attitudes, including where they are implied or reworded. It rewards a different skill from Exercise 1. There you retrieved a stated fact; here you trace an idea that has been dressed in different language.
