Conflict And Peace

Muhtasari

Almost everyone wants peace, yet conflict keeps returning. By 2024 the Global Peace Index counted 56 active state-based conflicts, the most since the Second World War, and the United Nations refugee agency reported a record 123.2 million people forced from their homes by war, violence and persecution. Behind those numbers are families, classrooms and economies turned upside down. Conflict and peace is one of the most important global issues you can study, because the way societies handle their disagreements shapes almost everything else.

This note does not ask you to memorise wars. It teaches you to think about conflict the way Global Perspectives expects: to see how it looks to an individual, to a community or country, and to the whole world; to weigh arguments against counter-arguments instead of taking sides; to judge the evidence and spot bias; and to reason your way toward realistic courses of action. Get this right and you have the toolkit for your report and your team project, not just one topic.

Malengo

  1. Explain why conflict and peace is an issue of global significance and describe its main causes and consequences.
  2. Compare personal, local/national and global perspectives on conflict and peace, with empathy and supporting evidence.
  3. Evaluate evidence, sources and arguments relating to conflict and peace, distinguishing fact, opinion, bias and vested interest.
  4. Develop a line of reasoning toward possible evidence-based courses of action on conflict and peace, and suggest report and team-project angles.

Maelezo ya Somo

Conflict ranges from a playground argument to a civil war, but in Global Perspectives we focus on conflict that crosses communities and borders: armed conflict, civil war, and the tense absence of trust that can tip into violence. Peace is more than the silence of the guns. Researchers distinguish negative peace (no active fighting) from positive peace (the institutions, fairness and relationships that stop conflict starting in the first place).
