Three science routes, three different commitments
If you are picking your Edexcel IGCSE subjects and you know science is part of the plan, the first question is not "which science?" but "how much science?" Pearson Edexcel offers three distinct routes, and each one locks in a different amount of time, a different number of exams, and a different set of options for what comes next. Getting this right early saves two years of frustration. Getting it wrong can mean scrambling at the A Level stage.
The three routes are Science Double Award (4SD0), Science Single Award (4SS0), and the separate sciences: Biology (4BI1), Chemistry (4CH1) and Physics (4PH1). This article walks through what each International GCSE route covers, how the exams work, and which route fits which student.
What each route is worth
The single most practical difference between the three routes is how many qualifications you end up with.

The Double Award counts as two subjects on your certificate. The Single Award counts as one. Separate sciences count as three. For a student aiming to take eight or nine IGCSE subjects in total, the difference is significant: choosing separate sciences uses three of those slots, while the Double Award achieves two with the same breadth of content.
What the Double Award (4SD0) covers
The Science Double Award syllabus includes content from all three sciences: biology, chemistry and physics. It does not skip any of the core topics. A student taking the Double Award will study cells, organ systems, genetics and ecology from biology; atomic structure, bonding, reactions and organic chemistry from chemistry; and forces, energy, waves, electricity and magnetism from physics.
The depth is slightly less than the separate sciences in some areas. Where the separate Biology syllabus might spend time on extended content such as monoclonal antibodies or detailed kidney function, the Double Award covers the fundamentals of each topic without always going to that level of detail. But the core is the same, and the understanding a student gains is genuinely comprehensive.
The Double Award is assessed through six exam papers: two for the biology component, two for chemistry, and two for physics. Each pair consists of a Paper 1 and a Paper 2, following the same pattern as the separate sciences. The total exam time is substantial, but the material is the same content you would cover in the separate sciences, just with slightly reduced depth in certain areas.
What the Single Award (4SS0) covers
The Science Single Award covers all three sciences but in less depth than the Double Award. It is designed for students who need a science qualification but want to devote more of their subject choices to other areas. The Single Award provides a broad scientific literacy rather than deep preparation in any one discipline.
Assessment is through two exam papers. The total exam time is shorter than the Double Award, reflecting the reduced content. The grade is a single number on the 9-1 scale.
The Single Award is a genuine IGCSE qualification and is recognised by universities. However, its reduced depth means it does not provide the same foundation for A Level sciences as the Double Award or the separate sciences. A student who takes the Single Award and then decides they want to study A Level Biology, for instance, will need to cover significant additional content independently.
What the separate sciences cover
Choosing separate sciences means studying Biology (4BI1), Chemistry (4CH1) and Physics (4PH1) as three individual subjects, each with its own specification, its own papers and its own grade. This is the most thorough route through science at the Edexcel IGCSE level.
Each subject is assessed through two papers. The specifications are detailed and comprehensive, covering all the content that the A Level courses expect as prior knowledge. The separate sciences are the gold standard for students who know they want to continue with one or more sciences at post-16 level.

The obvious cost is time. Three subjects means three sets of revision, three sets of past papers, and six exam papers in the exam period. A student taking separate sciences alongside English, Mathematics, a language and two humanities is looking at eight or nine IGCSE subjects in total. That is manageable for strong, organised students, but it leaves little room for subjects that might broaden the curriculum.
Progression to A Level and IB
This is where the choice has its biggest consequences. The table below maps each route onto the most common post-16 pathways.

If a student wants to keep the door open for Medicine, Veterinary Science or Engineering at a competitive university, separate sciences are the safest path. Those programmes typically specify GCSE or IGCSE grades in individual sciences, and a Double Award grade, while technically acceptable, may not meet the specific grade thresholds listed by some institutions.
How to decide
The decision tree is simpler than it looks:
- Are you aiming for A Level or IB Higher Level in one or more sciences? If yes, lean toward separate sciences. The depth and individual grading give you the strongest position.
- Do you want a broad science education without committing three subject slots? The Double Award gives you two qualifications for roughly two-thirds of the content load. It is the default choice for students who value science but also need room for other subjects.
- Do you mainly need a science qualification to tick a box? The Single Award is efficient but limited. It is best suited to students whose strengths and interests lie firmly outside the sciences and who simply need to demonstrate basic scientific competence.
- Are you unsure? Start with the Double Award. It keeps the A Level door open for most schools and does not consume three subject slots. If your interest deepens during Year 10, some schools allow a switch to separate sciences before it is too late.
A note on grading and grade boundaries
All three routes use the 9-1 grading scale. Grade boundaries are set independently for each subject and each session. The grade boundaries for the Double Award are set on the combined performance across all six papers, and the pair of grades reflects how that combined mark breaks down across the two constituent grades.
Because each route has its own papers, its own mark schemes and its own boundaries, the grades are not directly comparable in raw-mark terms. A grade 7 in the Double Award and a grade 7 in separate Biology both indicate strong performance, but they are assessed on different papers and against different criteria. Both are recognised equally by universities and post-16 providers.
Practical revision considerations
The volume of revision differs significantly. A student taking separate sciences has three specifications to cover, three sets of past papers to work through, and six exams to prepare for. A student taking the Double Award has one integrated specification (covering all three sciences) and six papers, but the total content is slightly less. A Single Award student has the lightest revision load.
