The Personal Portfolio is the component you develop over time. Your centre sets the theme or brief, and you work through the creative process at your own pace. It is internally set but externally marked, meaning your teacher guides your development, but an external examiner from Pearson awards the final marks.

The Externally Set Assignment begins when Pearson releases the exam paper, which contains a broad thematic starting point. You complete preparatory studies in response to the theme, then sit a 10-hour period of sustained focus under supervised conditions. That 10-hour session is where you produce your final outcome, working from your preparatory research and development.

The four assessment objectives

Both components are marked against the same four assessment objectives. Understanding these is essential because they tell you exactly what the examiner is looking for in your work.

How to approach the Personal Portfolio

The Personal Portfolio is your chance to show what you can do when given creative freedom. Your centre will set a theme or brief, and you develop a body of work in response. Think of it as building a design story, from initial research through experimentation to a resolved final piece.

  • Start with genuine research. Look at artists and designers who work in your chosen area of study. Do not just print images from the internet and glue them onto a page. Annotate what you find interesting, how their techniques relate to your project, and what you want to try as a result.
  • Experiment visibly. The examiner needs to see your process of experimentation. If you tried three different joining techniques before settling on one, show all three. Label them. Explain why you chose the one you did.
  • Use first-hand sources. Primary observation, whether that is drawing from life, photographing textures, or taking measurements of real objects, always scores higher than work based entirely on secondary sources.
  • Plan your sheets carefully. You submit three sheets of supporting studies and one sheet of final outcome(s), all maximum A2 size. That is a finite amount of space. Layout matters. Choose what to include based on what best demonstrates your journey and skill, not on how much you can fit.

How to approach the Externally Set Assignment

The Externally Set Assignment gives you a broad thematic starting point from Pearson. You then work through preparatory studies before sitting the 10-hour supervised session where you produce your final outcome.

  • Read the starting point carefully and respond personally. The theme is deliberately broad. Do not produce a generic response. The best work shows a personal interpretation that connects the theme to your interests and your chosen area of study.
  • Use preparatory time wisely. The preparatory period before the 10-hour session is where you do your research, experiments and planning. Arrive at the supervised session with a clear plan for what you will make and how you will make it.
  • Manage your 10 hours. Ten hours sounds generous, but materials need drying time, adhesives need setting, and unforeseen problems always appear. Budget your time. Know what you need to complete in each session if the 10 hours are split across multiple sittings.
  • Do not introduce new ideas in the supervised session. The 10-hour period is for execution, not exploration. Your preparatory studies should have resolved all major decisions about materials, techniques and composition before you sit down under supervised conditions.

The portfolio is not a sketchbook. Many students treat their supporting studies as a sketchbook where everything goes. The submission sheets are a curated selection of your best research, experiments and development. Think of them as a gallery exhibition, not a drawer full of every drawing you have ever made. Choose deliberately, present cleanly, and let each piece earn its place on the sheet.

Common mistakes to watch for

  • Weak research that does not connect to the outcome. Printing images of famous buildings without explaining how they influenced your architectural model wastes space and scores poorly on AO1. Every piece of research should have a visible thread leading to your development work.
  • Skipping material experiments. If your final piece is made from clay, the examiner wants to see that you tested different clays, glazes or firing temperatures. A single material used without any visible exploration suggests you did not engage with AO2.
  • Overcrowding the sheets. Four A2 sheets is a generous amount of space, but only if you use it well. Work that is crammed into every corner with tiny annotations is harder to read and harder to mark. White space is not wasted space; it helps the examiner see your work clearly.
