Ecology is where biology stops being about individual organisms and starts being about how they all fit together. If you have ever wondered why food webs collapse when one species disappears, this is the section that answers it.

The organism in the environment

Before you can talk about ecology, you need the vocabulary. The igcse specification uses four key terms that you must define precisely.

The specification also requires you to know how to use quadrats to investigate population size. A quadrat is a square frame (usually 0.25 m2 or 1 m2) placed randomly in the study area. You count the number of individuals of the target species inside the quadrat, repeat in multiple locations, calculate the mean count per quadrat, then scale up to estimate the total population across the whole area.

Abiotic factors (non-living, such as temperature, light intensity, water availability, soil pH) and biotic factors (living, such as predation, competition, disease) both affect population size and distribution.

Feeding relationships

This is about who eats whom, and how energy moves through an ecosystem. The edexcel igcse science double award explained in ecological terms uses a hierarchy of trophic levels.

  • Producers: organisms that make their own food by photosynthesis (green plants).
  • Primary consumers: herbivores that eat producers.
  • Secondary consumers: carnivores that eat primary consumers.

  • Decomposers: organisms (bacteria and fungi) that break down dead organic matter, recycling nutrients back into the soil.

A food chain shows a single pathway of energy transfer. A food web shows interconnected food chains in an ecosystem. The specification also requires you to understand three types of pyramid.

Only about 10% of energy is transferred from one trophic level to the next. The rest is lost through respiration (as heat), in excretory products, and in parts of the organism that are not eaten. This is why food chains rarely have more than four or five trophic levels: there is not enough energy left to support another level.

Common mistake: Saying energy is "lost" from the ecosystem. Energy is not destroyed. It is transferred to the surroundings as heat through respiration. It becomes unavailable to organisms at the next trophic level, but it has not vanished.

Cycles within ecosystems

The specification focuses on the carbon cycle. Carbon moves between the atmosphere, living organisms, dead organic matter and fossil fuels through four key processes.

  • Photosynthesis: plants absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and convert it into glucose (organic carbon).
  • Respiration: all living organisms release CO2 back into the atmosphere when they respire.
  • Decomposition: decomposers break down dead organisms, releasing CO2 through their own respiration.
  • Combustion: burning fossil fuels releases CO2 that was locked away millions of years ago.

For the exam, you should be able to describe each stage of the carbon cycle and explain how carbon atoms move between the atmosphere and living organisms. A common question format gives you a diagram of the cycle with blank arrows and asks you to label the process at each step.

Human influences on the environment

Air pollution

  • Sulfur dioxide is released when fossil fuels containing sulfur impurities are burned. It dissolves in rainwater to form acid rain, which damages trees, acidifies lakes (killing aquatic organisms) and corrodes buildings.
  • Carbon monoxide is produced by incomplete combustion of fossil fuels. It binds to haemoglobin in red blood cells, reducing the blood's ability to carry oxygen. In high concentrations it can be fatal.

The greenhouse effect

Greenhouse gases (water vapour, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane and CFCs) trap heat in the atmosphere. This is a natural process and without it Earth would be too cold for life. The problem is the enhanced greenhouse effect: human activities (burning fossil fuels, deforestation, agriculture, industrial processes) are increasing the concentration of greenhouse gases, trapping more heat and potentially leading to global warming.

Consequences of global warming include rising sea levels (from melting ice caps and thermal expansion of water), changing weather patterns, loss of habitats, and shifts in the distribution of species.

Water pollution

Sewage entering waterways provides a food source for bacteria. These bacteria multiply rapidly and use up dissolved oxygen through aerobic respiration. Aquatic organisms that need oxygen (fish, invertebrates) die as oxygen levels fall.

Eutrophication follows a specific sequence that the exam tests step by step:

  1. Fertilisers (containing nitrates and phosphates) are leached from farmland into rivers and lakes.
  2. These minerals stimulate rapid growth of algae on the water surface (an algal bloom).
  3. The algae block light to plants below the surface, which die.
  4. Bacteria decompose the dead plants, using up dissolved oxygen.
  5. Oxygen levels drop, and aerobic organisms such as fish die.

Linking the three sciences

Energy, for example, runs through all three: chemical energy in bond-breaking and bond-making, kinetic energy in moving objects, and metabolic energy in respiration. When you revise a topic in one science, look for the thread that connects it to the others. A question on photosynthesis might ask about the light energy absorbed, which links to the physics of the electromagnetic spectrum. A question on rates of reaction might reference enzymes, which links to biological catalysts. These cross-disciplinary connections are not accidental; the specification is designed to reward students who can think across boundaries.

Examiners value precise scientific language. "The particles move faster" is weaker than "the particles have greater kinetic energy, so a higher proportion exceed the activation energy on collision." Each additional technical term, used correctly, signals understanding rather than guesswork, and that distinction is what separates a grade 5 answer from a grade 7.

Revision tip: After finishing a topic in one science, write a single sentence connecting it to each of the other two. If you cannot, that gap is worth revisiting. The strongest Double Award candidates are the ones who see the three sciences as one interconnected system rather than three separate subjects that happen to share an exam.
