Know exactly what you are walking into

Paper 1 is 1 hour 45 minutes. 75 marks. Short-answer and structured questions covering the entire Computer Systems half of the IGCSE Computer Science syllabus. That means hardware, software, networks, data representation, databases, Boolean logic, cyber security, and automated and emerging technologies can all appear on the same paper.

There is no choice. You answer every question. The paper starts easier and builds toward harder, higher-mark questions at the end. If you run out of time on the final questions, you are throwing away the marks that carry the most weight.

Paper 1 snapshot: 1 hour 45 minutes, 75 marks total, all questions compulsory, short-answer and structured format, all Computer Systems topics examinable.

Time management: the 1.4-minute rule

You have 105 minutes for 75 marks. That gives you roughly 1.4 minutes per mark. Use this as your anchor throughout the exam.

Reserve the last 10 minutes for checking. Not re-reading the whole paper. Checking the questions where you left a gap or wrote something you were unsure about. Mark those with a small pencil dot as you go so you can find them fast.

Practical tip: When you open the paper, glance at the final page. See how many marks the last questions carry. Work backwards from there to confirm you have a rough plan for pacing. If the last question is worth 6 marks, you need 8 minutes clear at the end.

Command words: the marks are in the verb

Cambridge IGCSE is precise about command words. The verb at the start of the question tells you exactly what the examiner expects. Get this wrong and you lose marks even if your knowledge is correct.

The most common mistake on Paper 1 is writing an explanation when the question only asks you to state something. You waste time and gain nothing extra. Read the command word. Respond to the command word. Nothing more.

How the mark scheme actually works

Cambridge mark schemes follow a strict pattern. Understanding it gives you a direct advantage.

  • One point, one mark. A 3-mark question needs three distinct points. Writing one brilliant paragraph that only contains two ideas gets you 2 marks, not 3.
  • Technical terminology earns marks. The mark scheme lists specific terms. If the answer is about RAM, writing "temporary memory" might not earn the mark. Writing "volatile memory (RAM) that stores data currently in use" will.
  • "Describe" needs what + detail. Saying "a firewall protects a network" is one mark. Saying "a firewall inspects incoming and outgoing network traffic and blocks packets that do not meet predefined security rules" is two marks.
  • "Explain" needs what + why. Saying "data is encrypted before transmission" earns one mark. Adding "so that if it is intercepted, it cannot be read without the decryption key" earns the second.
  • Alternatives are listed. Mark schemes often accept multiple correct answers. But they will not accept vague or generic phrasing. Precision wins.
Mark scheme rule of thumb: Count the marks. Write at least that many separate, specific points. Use the correct technical term for each one. If you write four points for a 3-mark question, the examiner takes the best three.

Topic-by-topic exam strategies

Different topics appear in different question formats. Knowing what to expect helps you prepare efficiently.

Data representation

Expect conversion questions. Binary to denary, denary to binary, binary to hexadecimal, and hexadecimal to binary appear regularly. These are free marks if you practise the method. Show your working clearly. If you make an arithmetic slip but your method is correct, you can still earn method marks.

Two's complement, binary shifts, and overflow also appear. For character encoding, know the difference between ASCII and Unicode, and be able to explain why Unicode is needed for international character sets.

Sound and image representation questions typically ask you to describe how sampling rate, bit depth, resolution, or colour depth affect file size and quality. The pattern is always the same: higher value means better quality but larger file size. Be specific about which parameter does what.

Boolean logic

Truth tables and logic gate diagrams are near-guaranteed on Paper 1. Practise completing truth tables for AND, OR, NOT, NAND, NOR, and XOR gates until you can do them without thinking. The examiner wants the correct output for every input combination. One wrong row and you lose the mark for that row.

You may also be asked to write a Boolean expression from a truth table or draw a logic circuit from an expression. Practise both directions.

Networks

Scenario-based questions dominate here. You will read about a business or school setting up a network and answer questions about it. Know your network types (LAN, WAN), topologies (star, bus, mesh), hardware (router, switch, hub, NIC, WAP), and protocols (TCP/IP, HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, SMTP, IMAP, POP3).

For any "describe the benefits of..." network question, always tie your answer to the specific scenario given. Generic answers score lower.

Hardware and the CPU

The fetch-decode-execute cycle appears frequently. Know each stage and what happens in the registers (MAR, MDR, CIR, Accumulator, Program Counter). Questions often ask you to describe the role of specific registers or trace through the cycle for a simple instruction.

Input and output devices, primary and secondary storage: know examples, characteristics, and when each is appropriate. Compare magnetic, optical, and solid-state storage by speed, capacity, cost, and durability.

Software

System software versus application software. Operating system functions. Utility software examples (defragmentation, disk formatting, backup, antivirus). The mark scheme expects specific examples and specific functions, not generalizations.

Translators (compiler, interpreter, assembler) are a favourite. Know the differences between compilers and interpreters in terms of how they process source code, when errors are reported, and execution speed.

Databases

Flat-file versus relational databases. Primary keys, foreign keys, and how tables link together. SQL queries are examined on Paper 1. You need to write SELECT, FROM, WHERE, ORDER BY, and use operators like AND, OR, and wildcards. Practice writing SQL from a described scenario. Syntax matters.

Cyber security

This topic has grown in recent years. Expect questions on threats (malware, phishing, pharming, brute force attacks, DDoS, social engineering) and prevention methods (firewalls, encryption, access control, authentication, biometrics). Always match the threat to the prevention method. A question about phishing needs an answer about user education and email filtering, not about firewalls.

Automated and emerging technologies

Robotics, artificial intelligence, and their impact on daily life and employment. "Discuss" questions are common here. Prepare a mental list of advantages and disadvantages for automation in different contexts (manufacturing, healthcare, transport). Each point needs to be specific, not a vague statement about "making life easier".

Structuring answers by mark value

The number of marks tells you the depth and length expected. Here is how to structure your response based on mark allocation.

1-mark answers

One fact. One term. One sentence maximum. Do not elaborate.

Example: "State one type of secondary storage." Answer: "Solid-state drive (SSD)."

2-mark answers

Two separate points, or one point with a supporting detail. Use two sentences.

Example: "Describe one function of an operating system." Answer: "An operating system manages memory allocation. It ensures each running program is assigned sufficient RAM and prevents programs from accessing each other's memory space."

3-mark answers

Three distinct points. Each point should include a technical term and a brief explanation. Write three clear sentences or bullet points.

4-6 mark answers

These need structure. Spend 30 seconds planning before you write. For "discuss" questions, split your answer into advantages and disadvantages. For "explain" questions, build a logical chain: point, reason, consequence.

Quick formula for high-mark answers: Point + Evidence + Link. Make a claim. Support it with a technical detail. Link it to the scenario or question context. Repeat for each mark available.

Your past paper practice plan

Past papers are the single most effective revision tool for IGCSE Computer Science Paper 1. But how you use them matters more than how many you do.

Phase 1: Topic-by-topic (weeks 8-6 before the exam)

  1. Pick one topic per session (e.g., data representation).
  2. Collect all questions on that topic from the last 3-4 past papers.
  3. Answer them under relaxed conditions. Use your notes if needed.
  4. Mark your answers against the mark scheme. Highlight where you missed a technical term or gave a vague response.
  5. Write down the correct phrasing from the mark scheme. This is your exam vocabulary.

Phase 2: Timed sections (weeks 5-3 before the exam)

  1. Attempt a full past paper but split it into 30-minute blocks.
  2. Use strict timing. When the time is up, draw a line under your last answer.
  3. Mark everything. Focus on whether you finished within the time limit and whether your answers matched the mark scheme phrasing.

Phase 3: Full timed papers (weeks 2-1 before the exam)

  1. Sit a full paper in exam conditions. 1 hour 45 minutes. No notes. No phone.
  2. Mark it honestly. Calculate your raw score.
  3. Review every lost mark. Categorize: was it a knowledge gap, a timing problem, or a technique error?
  4. If it was knowledge, revise that topic. If it was technique, practise that question type again. If it was timing, adjust your pacing strategy.
Critical habit: After marking every past paper, read the examiner report for that session. Cambridge publishes these alongside the mark schemes. They tell you exactly where candidates lost marks and why. This is insider knowledge. Use it.

Exam day checklist

  • Read the whole question before writing anything.
  • Underline the command word and the number of marks.
  • Match your answer length to the marks available.
  • Use technical vocabulary from the syllabus, not everyday language.
  • Show all working for calculation questions.
  • If a question provides a scenario, reference it in your answer.
  • Do not leave any question blank. Even a partial answer can earn marks.
  • Use the final 10 minutes to return to any questions you flagged.

IGCSE Computer Science Paper 1 rewards students who are precise, who use the right terms, and who manage their time. You do not need to be a genius. You need to be disciplined, practised, and direct. Give the examiner exactly what they ask for, in the format they expect, and the marks follow.
