Was The Treaty Of Versailles Fair?

Muhtasari

On 28 June 1919, in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles, two German representatives signed a treaty they had played no part in writing. The guns of the First World War had fallen silent seven months earlier, but the peace settlement that followed would shape the next twenty years of European history. Was it a fair punishment for a defeated aggressor, or a vengeful diktat that planted the seeds of an even greater war? Few questions in modern history have been argued over so fiercely.

This lesson takes you inside the peace conference. You will meet the Big Three, Wilson, Clemenceau and Lloyd George, and see why their clashing aims meant nobody left satisfied. You will learn the actual terms of the treaty, the territory, money and military limits imposed on Germany, and weigh the bitter German reaction against the case the victors made for the settlement. By the end you will be able to argue both sides and reach a judgement of your own.

Maelezo ya Somo

The Treaty of Versailles is the hinge on which the whole interwar period turns. Almost every later crisis you study, the troubles of the Weimar Republic, the rise of Hitler, the failures of the League and the slide to war in 1939, can be traced back to arguments about whether this settlement was just. Cambridge examiners do not want a list of terms; they want you to weigh fairness from more than one point of view and reach a supported verdict. Learning to do that here trains the exact skill the whole course rewards.
