Circulatory Systems

Muhtasari

Every one of your cells needs a constant delivery of oxygen and food and a constant removal of waste. With billions of cells, diffusion alone is far too slow, so animals use a circulatory system: blood, driven by a pump through a network of vessels, with valves to keep it flowing one way.

In this lesson you will learn what a circulatory system is. Extended students will compare the single circulation of a fish with the double circulation of a mammal, and discover why passing the blood through the heart twice gives mammals a real advantage.

Malengo

  1. Describe the circulatory system as a system of blood vessels with a pump and valves to ensure one-way flow of blood
  2. [Supplement] Describe the single circulation of a fish
  3. [Supplement] Describe the double circulation of a mammal
  4. [Supplement] Explain the advantages of a double circulation

Maelezo ya Somo

A circulatory system is what lets a large, active animal stay alive: it moves materials far faster than diffusion could. Comparing fish and mammal circulation is a favourite Extended question because it rewards clear reasoning about blood pressure, so the logic here turns directly into marks.
