• An instrument of the play's justice. It is largely through Yakubu's efforts that the machinery of law is set in motion, leading to the trial in which the corrupt are exposed and punished. He helps deliver the "harvest" that the title promises, the reaping of what the corrupt have sown.

• Centre of worship and belief. The shrine is where the gods and ancestral spirits are honoured. The people of Mando look to it for blessing, protection and prosperity, so it stands at the core of their spiritual life.
• Source of guidance through the oracle. Important decisions in Mando are referred to the oracle at the shrine. The community believes the gods speak there, and this belief gives the shrine authority over public and private affairs.
• Seat of the priest's power. As custodian of the shrine, the soothsayer Maligu wields great influence. His control of the oracle allows him to interpret, and misinterpret, the will of the gods, making the shrine an instrument of power.
• A rite that can demand sacrifice. The culture attaches sacrifice to the shrine as a means of appeasing the gods. This custom is what makes the demand for "the blood of a stranger" appear legitimate to the people.
• A symbol open to manipulation. Precisely because the shrine commands such reverence, it becomes the very tool through which Maligu deceives the King and the people. The sacred institution is turned to a corrupt purpose, showing how a trusted custom can be exploited by the unscrupulous.

The plan of Hastings to elope with Constance Neville, taking her jewels beyond the reach of Mrs Hardcastle, breaks down in She Stoops to Conquer, and it is fair to ask how far Tony Lumpkin is responsible. A balanced view shows that Tony both helps the plan and, through a careless blunder, causes its immediate failure, yet he finally redeems it.

The case that Tony is to blame:

• The mishandled letter. Hastings sends Tony a letter revealing the elopement scheme. Tony, a poor reader, hands the letter over and it comes into Mrs Hardcastle's possession. Once she reads it, she discovers the plot, is enraged, and resolves to whisk Constance away to safety, wrecking the elopement at the very moment of its attempt.
• This blunder is the direct trigger of the failure, and it springs from Tony's carelessness and lack of learning.

The case that Tony is not wholly to blame:

• George is a wealthy, thoroughly assimilated African-American. He is materialistic, fashionable and comfortable in the white middle-class world.
• He is dismissive of Beneatha's interest in African heritage, mocking her natural hairstyle and telling her to drop what he calls her intellectual "routine." He wants a decorative, agreeable wife, not a thinking partner.
• George represents shallow assimilation and the pursuit of status without depth. Beneatha grows to despise his condescension and superficial values.

Conclusion. The two suitors function as foils. George embodies wealth without roots and assimilation without pride; Asagai embodies heritage, intellect and idealism. 2. Wit and wordplay, especially the pun on "rest." Herbert plays on the double meaning of "rest": it signifies both peaceful repose and the "remainder" of God's blessings. God gives man strength, beauty, wisdom, honour and pleasure, but keeps back rest so that man, weary and restless, will turn to God rather than to nature. This clever punning wit is typical of metaphysical verse.
3. Argumentative, logical structure on a religious theme. The poem unfolds like a reasoned argument, moving from God's act of creation to His deliberate strategy and its intended effect on the human soul. The subject is spiritual, the relationship between God and restless humanity, and the poet fuses intellect with devotion, thinking his way through a religious truth rather than merely feeling it.

Additional feature. The poem also uses paradox: God's apparent unkindness in withholding rest is really His deepest kindness, since human restlessness drives the soul back to its Maker.

Gbanabom Hallowell's "The Dining Table" uses the image of a dining table, ordinarily a place of nourishment and fellowship, to portray a nation turned into a battlefield during civil war. Against this grim setting the persona expresses a firm resolve to become a revolutionary, to rise against oppression and injustice.

• The dining table as a battlefield. The poet transforms the familiar table into a scene of conflict, where instead of food there is bloodshed and struggle. This central image frames the persona's decision: the ordinary spaces of life have been invaded by violence, and he can no longer be a passive onlooker.
• A hunger for change. The persona's appetite is redirected from food to justice; his "hunger" becomes a hunger to confront tyranny. This resolve marks his transformation from victim to fighter.
• Rejection of oppression. The persona refuses to accept the suffering imposed by those in power. His revolutionary stance is a protest against the wrongs that have turned his country into a place of death.
• Commitment despite danger. Aware of the risks of war and rebellion, the persona still chooses to take his stand, showing courage and determination. His resolve is not idle wishing but a considered readiness to act.
• Voice for the suffering people. In resolving to be a revolutionary, the persona speaks for the ordinary people crushed by the conflict, making his personal decision a collective cry for liberation.

How it is conveyed. Hallowell communicates this resolve through war imagery, the subverted symbol of the dining table, and a determined, defiant tone. The contrast between the table's peaceful associations and its violent reality sharpens the persona's call to action.

• Travis as the family's future. For Mama, Travis represents the coming generation for whose sake the family's sacrifices are made. Her dream of buying a house with a yard and a garden is partly a dream of giving Travis room to grow, a better life than the cramped apartment allows.
• A source of joy and continuity. The boy brings brightness into a household weighed down by poverty and disappointment. Through him Mama sees the continuation of the family line and the values her late husband worked and died for.

• The strain caused by the plot. When the King, deceived by Maligu, sanctions the sacrifice and the schemes that threaten those dear to Kindo, the trust between father and son collapses. Kindo can no longer support a ruler who has become the tool of corrupt men.

• Summer is too short. "Summer's lease hath all too short a date." The season passes quickly, so its beauty is fleeting, unlike the enduring beauty of the beloved.
• It is spoilt by rough winds. "Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May." Even the tender blossoms of early summer are battered by harsh weather, so the season is not gentle or perfect.
• It is sometimes too hot. "Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines." The sun can burn fiercely, making summer uncomfortable rather than pleasant.

• The classroom is a place of fear and tedium. He describes sitting in school "in sighing and dismay," under the "cruel eye" of a stern teacher. Learning offered under fear and boredom becomes a weariness rather than a pleasure.

A wise ruler tests the counsel of his priests; Santigi merely obeys.
