Swallow a mouthful of food and it disappears into a tube that will take it several metres and several hours to cross. Along the way it is churned by muscle, soaked in chemicals made by organs sitting outside the tube, broken into molecules small enough to cross a membrane, and finally stripped of its water. Nothing about that is one organ doing one job, and nothing about it is one tissue either.
In this lesson you will name the three animal tissues this course asks for and say exactly what each one does, watch all three at work in the wall of a single organ, and then follow the digestive system organ by organ. The reward is bigger than it looks. A long question on digestion stops being a list to memorise and becomes a journey you can walk through in order, and the specimen paper shows examiners doing precisely that: handing you a labelled diagram of the body and asking which letter is which organ.
Objetivos
- Examples of animal tissues include: muscular tissue, which can contract to bring about movement; glandular tissue, which can produce substances such as enzymes and hormones; epithelial tissue, which covers some parts of the body.
- An example of an animal organ is the stomach, which contains: muscular tissue, to allow contents to move through the digestive system; glandular tissue, to produce digestive juices; epithelial tissue, to cover the outside and the inside of the stomach.
- An example of an animal organ system is the digestive system, a system in which humans and other mammals exchange substances with the environment. The digestive system includes: glands, such as the pancreas and salivary glands, which produce digestive juices; the stomach and small intestine, where digestion occurs; the liver, which produces bile; the small intestine, where the absorption of soluble food occurs; the large intestine, where water is absorbed from the undigested food, producing faeces.
