In 1931 Stalin told Soviet managers that the country was fifty or a hundred years behind the advanced nations, and that it must close the gap in ten years or be crushed. The drive to industrialise that followed transformed the Soviet Union from a peasant land into a major industrial power within a single decade. But the speed came at a staggering human price, including a famine that killed millions. Were Stalin's economic policies a triumph of modernisation or a catastrophe for the Soviet people, and how do we weigh the two?
This lesson examines the two great campaigns: the Five-Year Plans that built heavy industry from 1928, and the collectivisation of agriculture that forced peasants onto state-run farms.
