Mrs Bennet is not being silly when she panics about her daughters. Once you know that one fact, a character who looks merely ridiculous becomes a woman with a real emergency on her hands, and the whole novel changes shape.
Context is not background decoration. It is the set of rules the first readers already knew and the writer therefore never explains. This note shows how Regency property law, Jacobean beliefs about kingship and witchcraft, and the fused religion and law of Puritan Massachusetts each make their texts mean what they mean, and how to use that knowledge in an essay without writing a history lesson.
