Product Analysis
Visão Geral
Take apart any graphic product in your mind - a board game, a pop-up greetings card, a perfume carton, a magazine - and you can read the decisions that made it. What materials were chosen and why? How many were made, and by which scale of production? How was quality kept consistent? What happens to it when it is finished with? Product analysis is the skill of looking at a real product and explaining the thinking behind it.
This note builds that skill for graphic products. You will learn to analyse a product against the materials it is made from, the four scales of production (one-off, batch, mass and continuous), the quality-assurance checks that run through manufacture, the full life cycle of a product from design to disposal, and the important idea of obsolescence - both the deliberate kind and the accidental kind - and what it means for sustainability.
Objetivos
- analyse real-world products made from the materials listed in section 3.1
- understand the main scales of production are: - prototype or one-off production - batch production - mass production - continuous production
- understand that quality assurance checks are used throughout manufacture to ensure a product meets the customers’ expectations
- understand that products are: - designed - manufactured - used and maintained - disassembled and reused, recycled or disposed of at the end of their useful life
- understand the concepts of planned and unplanned obsolescence and the impact on sustainability.
